Crypto scalping is a short-term trading style where you open and close positions within seconds to minutes, aiming to capture small price movements over and over rather than betting on one big move. The name comes from "skimming" — taking tiny slices of profit repeatedly throughout the day.
How it works:
- Very short holding periods — positions typically last seconds to a few minutes, rarely beyond the session.
- Tiny profit targets — scalpers might take profit after a 0.1–0.5% move instead of waiting for 10%+.
- High trade frequency — dozens or hundreds of trades per day, so it's much more intense than swing or position trading.
- Technical-driven — relies on order books, candlestick patterns, momentum, and often automated/bot execution rather than fundamentals or news analysis.
Why it's demanding (the honest version):
- Fees eat profits fast. At small per-trade margins, even a 0.1% fee on both entry and exit can wipe out a large share of your edge. Exchanges with low or maker-based fees (and tight spreads) matter a lot — this is the #1 reason scalping on high-fee venues tends to lose money for beginners.
- Spread is your first cost. You buy at the ask and sell at the bid; that gap is a built-in loss you must overcome on every trade.
- It's stressful and hard to sustain. The psychological load of constant decision-making and the risk of overtrading are real.
- Leverage amplifies both sides. Scalpers often use leverage to make small moves worthwhile, which also magnifies losses. A few bad trades in a row can take out a day's (or more) profits.
Why some people do it anyway: it's one of the few strategies that can be reasonably applied to markets moving sideways with no clear trend, and with bots it can run semi-automatically.
