Bitcoin On-chain Analysis
On-chain analysis means studying the raw activity recorded permanently on Bitcoin's public ledger (the blockchain) rather than relying on exchange prices, headlines, or sentiment. Because every Bitcoin transaction is public, auditable, and can't be undone, the blockchain itself becomes a dataset for understanding what holders are actually doing — not just what they're saying.
What it actually measures
Holder behavior
- HODL waves / coin age — how long coins have sat untouched in one wallet. Coins dormant for years moving again signals old hands selling (or moving to custody); coins aging quietly signals accumulation.
- Exchange netflows — coins moving into exchanges often precedes sell pressure; coins moving out to private wallets suggests withdrawal to self-custody (bullish leaning).
- Supply on exchanges vs. cold storage — the share of total supply sitting on trading platforms vs. in wallets.
Cost-basis and profit
- Realized price / MVRV — the average price at which the current supply was last moved, compared to spot price. Far above it = the market is in heavy profit; below it = the average holder is underwater.
- SOPR (Spent Output Profit Ratio) — whether coins being spent are sold at a profit or a loss; spikes/lows mark fear and greed extremes.
Miners and issuance
- Hash rate and miner revenue — network security and how much miners are earning, which affects their incentive to sell.
- Miners-to-exchange flows — whether miners are sending freshly minted coins to sell or holding them.
Glassnode / CryptoQuant-style indexes
- Net unrealized profit/loss, long-term vs. short-term holder supply, and cycle-position indicators derived from the above.
The important caveat
On-chain data describes market structure and activity, not a guaranteed prediction. A metric like MVRV can stay "extreme" for months. On-chain tools measure where the market sits, and are best combined with macro context (rates, liquidity, regulation) rather than used as a standalone timing signal.
